St. James Episcopal Church, located in the Baltimore City neighborhood of Irvington, is the location of the after school program. This is the newest of the Peace Center's programs, launched in Fall 2006 after more than a year of planning.
The free after school program provides a supervised, nurturing, and creative environment for children during the late afternoon hours. We work with a group of about 15 neighborhood children who range in age from 7 to 11 years old.
The program is held Mondays and Wednesdays from 4:00pm to 6:00pm, in a large community space on church grounds. Boasting a stage, kitchen facilities and plenty of room for active kids, the space was recently redecorated and made kid-safe and kid-friendly.
The program begins each afternoon with a substantial, healthy snack and time to work on homework. The rest of our session is spent participating in a wide variety of activities, like science experiments, arts and crafts, singing, drama, games and physical activities.
Our director, a certified K-12 art education teacher, personally coordinates the curriculum, supervises the children and schedules the volunteers.
Cost of the program, including refreshments and supplies, are covered by grants and donations.
Volunteers from area churches, schools, and the neighorhood give generously of their time and talents to work with this wonderful group of children. Volunteers and donations are always welcomed. Learn more about the program. Find out how you can help.
