All God's Children

All God's Children summer camp offers Baltimore area children from diverse racial and cultural backgrounds an opportunity to enjoy and appreciate their differences together. Co-sponsored by the Children's Peace Center and the Church of the Holy Nativity in Baltimore, the camp provides children time to play, work, and learn in a community dedicated to peace. This week is spent at the Bishop Claggett Center, a conference facility and camp of the Episcopal Diocese of Maryland, located on a 260-acre former working farm in rural Fredrick County, MD.

In 2008, the camp was held on August 10-15, with 56 campers and 31 staff. The staff included eight junior counselors who received training each day in leadership and management.

The theme for the 2008 camp was Creation. The six small groups focused on a different day of creation for each of Monday-Thursday. Poetry and walks around the Claggett campus were used to observe and celebrate God's creation. The campers painted a counselor's car in the creation theme. On Thursday night each group performed its own original play.

Fishing, swimming, trips to Sugarloaf Mountain, fruit picking, bicycling, the ropes course, and Camp Fabulous were enjoyed by all.

The staff of adults, young adults, and junior counselors works hard to help the children develop skills in all areas of their lives, from biking to study to worship. For many of the campers, this peaceful, safe, and stimulating week is their only experience of Maryland outside of their city neighborhoods.
